Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was a passenger in a police vehicle that struck and injured a sixty-year-old woman earlier today.

The mayor's office has been telling reporters that Garcetti was on the phone at the time of impact and "did not see what happened."

The accident occurred as a city police officer drove the mayor back to City Hall, following an interview about his mayoral track record with the Associated Press at their downtown Los Angeles bureau (where the above photograph was taken).

It's worth noting that Los Angeles authorities have recently been policing the area — where jaywalking tickets cost more than speeding tickets — not to promote safe driving, but to crack down on pedestrians.

A Fire Department spokesperson told the Mercury News earlier today that his office had been ordered not to report the woman's condition, confirming only that she had been transported to the hospital.
