“Pink Panther” Jewel Thief Escapes Swiss Prison
A member of the "Pink Panther" gang of jewel thieves escaped from a Swiss prison this week, making him the third gang member to escape since May.
Milan Poparic, a Bosnian man serving a six-year sentence, was broken out by two armed men who drove commercial vehicles into the prison, rammed a gate, and opened fire on guards with automatic weapons. Another inmate, who had previously broken out of the same prison in 1992, escaped with Poparic.
The Pink Panthers are suspected in around 340 robberies across the globe, stealing goods worth more than $436 million, according to Interpol. The international group has "a weakness for expensive watches," according to the New York Times.
The group was given the Pink Panther name after British police found a diamond hidden in a tub of face cream.
