Irene Just Won't Leave Vermont Alone

Lauri Apple · 08/29/11 01:15AM

Poor Vermont! Even though it's America's 47th least-horrible state and a magical place of ice cream and cows, Tropical Storm Irene has been abusing it mercilessly. Severe flooding has submerged homes under brownish water, destroyed charming bridges, and taken a life. This video shows the Brattleboro farmer's market as it appeared on Sunday: like a river with broken tents floating in it.

Vladimir Putin's Picture Added to STD Warning

Jeff Neumann · 08/29/11 12:35AM

If there's one thing you do not mess with, in Russia, it's Vladimir Putin's image as an International Man of Sexiness. But that's what a group of anarchists in Siberia did by adding a picture of a sickly Putin, as well as President Dmitry Medvedev and several other politicians, to an ad about gonorrhea and other STDs that asks, "Do you need such companions?" This happened back in February but is still being investigated, which probably isn't a good sign for the alleged anarchists. Police arrested three men and conducted raids, where they found "extremist literature" and other anarchy-causing tools. If convicted, they could face seven years in a gulag for "hooliganism." If there is a bright side, at least they're already in Siberia.

Watch as this reporter, embedded in Asbury Park, N.J. and decked out in what appears to be a full-body weatherproof suit, runs from the puniest of ocean waves. Whoah! Let's get out of here!

Lauri Apple · 08/28/11 01:11PM

Restaurants in New York City have been tweeting their Sunday brunch offerings, not their structural damages reports. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is declaring "the worst" to be over. A few city streets were flooded, but it wasn't that bad, and the vast majority of people who live along Irene's blustery path up and down the East Coast have survived. How can this be?

Jeff Neumann · 08/28/11 12:04PM

Let the Casey Anthony book deal cash flow bonanza begin! The assistant state attorney in the trial that failed to convict a woman who was already convicted by cable television viewers, Jeff Ashton, is writing a book to be published in Novemeber titled Imperfect Justice: Prosecuting Casey Anthony. Strong title! The book is set to be 256 pages.
