Bill Clinton Calls the Anti-Gay Marriage Act He Signed Into Law Unconstitutional

Taylor Berman · 03/07/13 09:27PM

In an op-ed published Thursday evening in the Washington Post, former president Bill Clinton announced his opposition to the Defense of Marriage Act, which he signed into law in 1996. Clinton defended his initial support of the bill, saying that, when it was passed, there were no states that recognized same-sex marriage. At the time, Clinton said the bill seemed like the best option to prevent a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

Adam Carolla: 'What's Wrong with Blacks and Latinos?'

Cord Jefferson · 03/07/13 08:43PM

You might remember Adam Carolla as the underachieving half of the Man Show. Whereas Carolla's former partner in chugging beers and looking at boobs, Jimmy Kimmel, has gone onto fame and fortune as a late-night host, Carolla now hosts a podcast on which he frequently maligns minority groups.

James O'Keefe Will Pay $100,000, Apologize to Former ACORN Employee

Taylor Berman · 03/07/13 07:55PM

Journalism school laughingstock and expert jazz hands practitioner James O'Keefe will pay $100,000 and apologize to a former ACORN employee who was fired after being featured in one of O'Keefe's 2009 "sting" videos. The heavily-edited videos were successful, in that they led to a congressional investigation that eventually shutdown ACORN, netting O'Keefe $65,000 in the process. The videos were also, apparently, illegally filmed, at least the one shot in California. Former ACORN employeed Juan Carlos Vera sued O'Keefe and his partner-in-crime Hannah Giles last year, saying the secretly recorded video violated California law that prohibits recording someone without their permission.

World's Wrongest Investment Guru Still Thinks His Big Prediction Might Come True

Hamilton Nolan · 03/07/13 06:11PM

In 1999, James Glassman and Kevin Hassett—two men with actual academic credentials—published the most hilariously wrong investment book of all time, entitled, quite hopefully, "Dow 36,000." (Highly recommended reading for humor value!) The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed on Dec. 31, 1999 at 11,497—but the authors, for a variety of reasons much too complicated for you to appreciate, postulated that it could hit 36,000 within "between three and five years."

Self-Appointed Privilege Police Officer Denounces Macklemore’s Pro-Equality Anthem

Rich Juzwiak · 03/07/13 05:11PM

Racialicious has a piece today about the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis song "Same Love" (featuring Mary Lambert), and people seem to care about it. The gist of "Race + Hip-Hop + LGBT Equality: On Macklemore's White Straight Privilege" by Hel Gebreamlak is that because Macklemore, a white indie rapper based in Seattle, did not say something the way Hel Gebreamlak would have said it, Macklemore is wrong. How internet of Gebreamlak.

Just over 12 hours after Rand Paul stopped filibustering, John Brennan was confirmed as the director of the CIA.

Watch the Trailer for Joss Whedon's Shakespeare Adaptation, Much Ado About Nothing

Maggie Lange · 03/07/13 03:27PM

While "the course of true love never did run smooth," Joss Whedon's jazzy, sparkly foray into Shakespeare adaptations looks velvety. His take on Much Ado About Nothing is shot mostly in black and white, with restrained splashes of color. Underscored by St. Germain's Rose Rouge, the swingy sampling of Marlena Shaw crooning "I want you to get together" repeatedly, it sets up what seems more like a self-aware battle of wits rather than a maudlin romance.

Wal-Mart Despised From Coast to Coast

Hamilton Nolan · 03/07/13 01:39PM

Crap purveyor Wal-Mart has been trying for years to build itself a store in New York City, one of the few places in America that doesn't already have 666 Wal-Mart locations. The company's had a surprisingly hard time of it, what with all the angry union members and grumbling liberals around here.
