Cities Are Building Tiny Parks to Get Sex Offenders to Move

Max Rivlin-Nadler · 03/10/13 09:22AM

Taking advantage of strict laws that dictate where a sex offender can live while on parole, cities across the country are building little parks for the sole purpose of making offenders move. Residents of the Harbor Gateway neighborhood in Los Angeles have pushed community leaders to buy a small lot that will serve the singular purpose of making it nearly impossible for the group of 30 paroled sex offenders to continue living in their apartment complex up the street.

Staring Into the Abyss

Chris Arnade · 03/09/13 01:59PM

Almost two years ago I walked into the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx with my camera. I came because I was told not to go, that it was the poorest neighborhood in all of New York and one of the most violent in all of the United States. I was immediately drawn in by a humanity that transcended the headlines.

U.S. Delays Award to Egyptian Activist After Finding Her Anti-Semitic Tweets

Samira Ibrahim was scheduled to receive an award yesterday from First Lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry honoring her as one of the "International Women of Courage". But that was before the State Department became aware of a number of tweets that Ibrahim had sent out endorsing Hitler quotes and celebrating the deaths of Israeli tourists. Now her award has been "delayed" as State Department officials look into the source of the tweets (which Ibrahim had been claiming weren't hers).

Air Force Stops Reporting Drone Strikes in Afghanistan

The Air Force has reversed a policy of reporting drone strikes in Afghanistan and has wiped the information from past reports that were on its website as well. Last October, the Air Force Central Command began publishing reports of the strikes from remote piloted aircraft as part of an effort to "provide more detailed information on RPA ops in Afghanistan." After releasing statistics for each month through January, the February report contained no information regarding drone strikes, and the older reports have each had their drone strike information removed from the website (the Air Force is apparently unfamiliar with the wonders of Archive.org).

When People Write for Free, Who Pays?

Cord Jefferson · 03/08/13 06:10PM

This week, veteran journalist Nate Thayer posted to his personal blog an email exchange he'd recently had with an editor from the Atlantic. The editor was asking Thayer to take something he'd already written and adapt a shorter version for use on the Atlantic's website, but there was a catch: The editor wanted Thayer to do it for free. "I am a professional journalist who has made my living by writing for 25 years," Thayer wrote, "and am not in the habit of giving my services for free to [for-profit] media outlets so they can make money by using my work and efforts by removing my ability to pay my bills and feed my children."

Holly Madison's Daughter Sounds Like a Very Bright Pasta

Caity Weaver · 03/08/13 06:00PM

When we first met Holly Madison, she was heroically rescuing the iconic Landsdowne portrait of George Washington from the 1814 Burning of Washington by British troops. No, wait. That's Dolley Madison. When we first met Holly Madison, it was on an episode of Cribs. She was living at the Playboy Mansion with a bunch of similarly proportioned women, calling Hugh Hefner "Puffin," and pleading with him to put a ring on it. He refused, because he would never marry again. She seemed perfectly nice.
