Political reporter and columnist Jack Germond—variously known as a Boy on the Bus, Fat Man in a Middle Seat, and the round half of the Baltimore Sun's long-running and nationally ubiquitous Germond and Witcover tandem—died today at the age of 85. The Washington Post quotes him: "I have always argued that newspapers should not have any civic purpose beyond telling readers what is happening."

Jesse Jackson Jr. was sentenced to 30 months in prison today for misusing nearly $750,000 in campaign funds. Jackson's wife was also given a year in jail for filing false tax returns. The presiding judge agreed to let the Jacksons stagger their sentences so their children could have at least one parent in the home.

UPS Plane Crashes, Explodes Near Birmingham

A large UPS cargo plane crashed early this morning in a field close to Birmingham, killing its pilot and co-pilot. The Airbus A300 was en route to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport from Louisville, Kentucky, when it crashed around 6 a.m, just half a mile from the runway. The impact reportedly caused two explosions, with debris scattered in a wide range around the site. Local police report that no homes were affected by the crash.

Doctors Without Borders has decided to close all its medical programs in Somalia, citing "imbalance [between] risks & compromises that staff must make, and our ability to provide impartial care." In the 22 years the organization has worked in Somalia, 16 staff members have been killed.
