Target is reportedly raising its minimum wage to $10 an hour, following a similar announcement by Walmart last year. This will not satisfy the “$15 an hour” movement, but it’s nice to see Target forced to do something (minimally) nice for its long-suffering workers.

Florida Congressional Candidate Penned Gross Song(?) About Banging a Very Drunk Woman

Ashley Feinberg · 04/19/16 01:32PM

Before he was a star on the rise in the world of Florida politics, State Senator Darren Soto was apparently a member George Washington University Law School’s Law Revue, a “musical and sketch comedy show,” which sounds almost as terrible as the Florida House of Representatives. In 2006, three short years after he authored a Law Revue song in which he lamented, “Back when we were both 1-L’s you were in my section/I spent every day in Con Law hiding my erection,” he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. The good people of Florida reelected him for several more terms before moving on to the State Senate in 2012 (and for which he was reelected in 2014).

Research shows that Chobani yogurt ads served to people searching on Yahoo for “yogurt-related terms” did indeed result in them buying more Chobani. Imagine a human pathetic enough to use the worst search engine and eat the worst Greek yogurt. What a vile and disheartening tableau.

Louis Theroux Was Surveilled By the Church of Scientology, and He Made a Movie About It

Rich Juzwiak · 04/19/16 12:27PM

Here’s how Louis Theroux baited members of the Church of Scientology into following him: He started following them. The British journalist probably best known on these shores for his documentaries about the Westboro Baptist Church (The Most Hated Family in America, America’s Most Hated Family in Crisis) says he set out to discover a “different, more positive side” to Scientology when he embarked upon his project over 10 years ago. When it was clear that his access would be limited only to ex-Scientologists like Marty Rathbun, Theroux and director John Dower changed course to stage a series of reenactments a la Joshua Oppenheimer’s 2012 doc The Act of Killing. Using the accounts of ex-Scientologists and a cast of actors, Theroux and Dower recreated things like the alleged abuse by Scientology head David Miscavige toward members of his church in the compound at Gold Base known as “the Hole.”

Airbnb Is Not the Big Enemy of Labor. Uber Is.

Hamilton Nolan · 04/19/16 10:00AM

“The sharing economy is here!” we are frequently advised. “We must devise a new labor deal for a new century!” we are warned. So why is making a deal between Airbnb and unions so fucking hard?

The Gawker Endorsement: None of Them

Alex Pareene · 04/19/16 09:36AM

For the first time in the modern primary era, the New York presidential primary election, happening today, is actually important in the races for both the Republican and Democratic nominations. For the conscientious citizen, this is lousy news. You can no longer engage in the beloved New York tradition of just writing in Howard Stern, confident that your vote wouldn’t have mattered anyway.

It’s primary day in New York, and you no doubt feel ready to cast your vote. But where? Probably your friendly, neighborhood senior center, public school, or rec center, dummy. But find out for sure with this handy tool, you handy tool.
