Over 200 Workers Trapped in Illegal South African Gold Mine
On the eastern edges of Johannesburg, in Benoni, rescue workers are attempting to free more than 200 miners who are trapped in an abandoned gold mine, after it was being worked illegally for gold.
The area experienced a rockslide that led to the miners having no outside exit, and only 30 of the team were close enough to the surface to speak to rescue workers. A South Africa Eyewitness News correspondent, Govan Whittles, said that those who could speak with rescuers claimed that the rockslide was caused by a rival worker group.
Rescuers came to the scene when screams were heard near the abandoned mine earlier today.
