At least one person is dead and another is reportedly trapped after the ceiling of an under-construction hotel in midtown Manhattan collapsed this morning.

The collapse took place just after 10:30 am, at hotel being renovated at 25 W. 38th St. between Fifth and Sixth Aves. The hotel’s developer, Fortuna Realty Group, refused to comment to the New York Times, with a rep telling the paper the firm was still gathering information about the accident.

The Times also reports that a Cuban restaurant, Havana NY, has remained open on the building’s first floor during

UPDATE 12:40 pm: The New York Post spoke to a man who said he was working inside the building. “All I heard were people screaming and yelling,” the man told the Post. The two top floors collapsed and people are still trapped.

“The ceiling caved in on the two top floors,” he added. “Every injured person is still in there. The guy in charge was screaming for everyone to get out.”

The Post also reports that one person was rescued from the rubble and is in serious condition.
