Four months after the deadly shooting in Charleston reignited the national debate about the appropriateness of hanging a deeply racist symbol on government property, the University of Mississippi has removed the Mississippi state flag—which includes a miniature confederate emblem in its top left corner—from its campus.

Last week, the university’s student body passed Resolution 15-13, which called for the flag’s removal.

“This is one small step in the structure change we want to see at the University,” President of the UM NAACP Buka Okoye told the Daily Mississipian. “I’m positive for the future because of how quickly the administration acted.”

The move comes five years after Ole Miss retired its Confederate soldier mascot, “Colonel Reb,” replacing it with a black bear. The team is still called the Rebels and people like this still attend the university, but small steps, I guess.
