Off-Duty Rookie Tennessee Cop Fatally Shot
Rookie police officer Terence Olridge was shot and killed while off duty this afternoon in Cordova, a Memphis, Tennessee suburb, reports NBC News.
In a news conference Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong described the circumstances of the shooting as “sketchy.” Local residents described hearing a loud argument and then 15 shots being fired, although no indication is given of whether there was an exchange of gunfire or a single shooter.
The local NBC affiliate reported that a suspect is already in custody, along with other details:
The suspect’s sister said someone pulled a gun on him earlier in the day. She said her brother was washing his car when got into an argument with Olridge.
Neighbors said Olridge lived in the neighborhood, but it is unclear whether he did.
WREG Memphis reports that the victim was in uniform and on his way to work when he was shot in his car, and that he was able to crawl back to his home.
Officer Olridge joined the police in September 2014 and was an expectant father, with his fiancee reportedly four months pregnant. He is the second Memphis police officer to be fatally shot in just three months, after Sean Bolton was killed during a routine traffic stop in August.
