NYU Student Snapchatted Video of Himself Setting Classmate on Fire
A 20-year-old NYU student was arraigned on Monday for allegedly setting a classmate on fire while she slept and then sharing video of the attack on Snapchat.
Jaime Castano allegedly set his 19-year-old classmate on fire after she fell asleep in his dorm room in August. Despite waking in the middle of the night to put out the flames and suffering burns to her torso, the woman reportedly didn't realize she'd been burned until the next morning, when she saw video of the attack on Snapchat.
According to court papers obtained by the New York Daily News, Castano confessed to police that he filmed the woman "asleep in his bed with flames on her clothing while [HE] sang, then showed her waking up and trying to put out the flames while he recorded it." He allegedly told the victim he set her blanket on fire the day after the attack.
The Daily News reports Castano was expelled from NYU in September; he's currently being held on $50,000 bond on charges of first-degree assault and reckless endangerment.
