In the criminal justice system, the people are "represented" by two separate, yet equally important groups: the police, who beat the shit out of people, fabricate bullshit, abuse the citizenry and generally don't give a damn, and the District Attorneys, who can sometimes be assed to do something about it, but not usually. These are their stories.
Duh! Duh!
That would work so much better with the theme music.
Sam Waterston just shed a tear some where....
I always hear it with a 'n' at the end. "Dun! Dun!"
Although, after that TNT bit where one of the actors referred to it as the "Doink doink," that gets stuck in my head too.
From the article, the officer's story fell apart because he said that the photographer "repeatedly discharged his flash in the officer's face", interfering with his arrest of a teenage girl. That was false based on the evidence (witness testimony and none of the pictures used a flash), but what kills me about cops — and completely undermines the "few bad apples" apologists — is that the department immediately backed up the officer's actions, not even using his own argument.
At the time, the Police Department said in a statement that officers had given “numerous lawful orders” for both the crowd and Mr. Stolarik to move back, but that he tried to push forward and “inadvertently” struck an officer in the face with his camera. The police said that Mr. Stolarik “violently resisted being handcuffed,” leading to a second officer being cut on the hand.
So basically, if you get the shit beat out of you by a cop for no reason, even before the NYPD knows what's going on they will issue an official statement calling you a violent criminal who deserved it. Not a "we're looking into it," not a "an investigation is ongoing," not even a "Mr. Stolarik's account contradicts the information we have at hand." Just straight to "well he had to be attacked by a cop, because he's a violent criminal. Have you thanked a cop today?"
I have a whole lot of LEOs in my family.
That is exactly how it works. The reason this cop fucked up is because he kicked the shit out of a middle aged white guy that works for the New York Times. You just don't do that, but then again...some motherfuckers are just too stupid to breathe, much less police something.
It's been a real transition for these guys since the Giuliani era. Many of the middle guys that came in during the 90's or 00's don't realize that the city is a different place. There's a whole lot more people who 'matter' and a whole lot less savages hanging around. Half of these cops grew up in the same suburban enclaves I did listening to their cafone parents talk about how the old neighborhood went to shit because of the moulinyans. They see themselves more as zookeepers rather than cops.
From the article:
If convicted on the top count, he faces up to seven years in prison and could lose his job.
How is it could? Would they alternatively give him a medal, good job violating the first Amendment! Keep up the good work! We've got the 1st and 4th taken care of, lets work on the other 25!
I agree totally. In many instances, it's simply a cop's word against a citizen when in court (think: traffic tickets). All we have is his word that the radar gun read 70 in a 55. Once he's proven to not be truthful when presenting information pertaining to his job, he's absolutely useless to us as a law enforcement agent.
Hey, give him a break! It's not like he attacked a rich, white guy.
I always hated big brother, but shit like this makes me happy one day everyone will be wearing icams.
