Nurse in Spain First Person to Contract Ebola Outside of Africa
A Spanish nurse who treated an Ebola patient in Madrid last month has tested positive for the deadly disease, according to the BBC. If subsequent tests are confirmed, the woman, whose name has not been released, would be the first person to contract the virus outside of Africa.
The nurse was part of the Madrid-based medical team that treated Manuel Garcia Viejo, a Spanish priest who contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone and died in a Madrid hospital on September 25.
The nurse was admitted to hospital on Monday morning with a high fever, Spanish newspaper El Pais said.
Doctors isolated the emergency treatment room, the report said.
The news comes less than one week the first case of Ebola was confirmed in the United States.
