Marilyn Manson says disturbing footage that leaked last month, showing the simulated rape of Lana Del Rey, was "not for my video." The singer told NME that Hostel director Eli Roth filmed the scene to test a camera, and it was later released out of context by a video editing company.

Here's how he explained the situation:

"It wasn't a Marilyn Manson video. The editor of the company that put it out was somebody who's edited my videos, that video was something that was done with a camera that Eli (Roth - director), who's my friend, and I both wanted to test out, so I let him test it out [...] what they filmed was put in context seemingly as if it were a Marilyn Manson video, and that was in no way the intention."

The confusion stemmed from the company's video reel, which cut the disturbing footage together with shots that ended up in two different Manson videos.

Manson did want to make a video with Del Rey, he told NME, but it turned out he just couldn't work with her:

Eli and I wanted to do a music video with her but she was being such a problem. Although I still respect her, I'm friends with her. I just left, I was tired, I was not willing to make that part of the video.

The rape scene, Manson added, was not what he had in mind for his Del Rey collaboration.

"I would not make a video of that nature, nor would Eli," he said.

Wait, but Roth did shoot that video, and Manson was present "at various points during the filming, the NME reported. So what is he talking about?

"I don't think either of us were ever intending for that to be seen, it was more of a camera test. I'm a person that would beat somebody's ass if they raped somebody that I know."

Oh.

Roth said something similar about the Del Rey scene in an interview last October: "The footage is so sick, it's been locked in a vault for over a year," he told Larry King.

At least they didn't put it in a music video. That's something. Sort of.
