Man Serves 15-Year Sentence, Immediately Robs Same Store Upon Release
On Friday, Christopher Miller was released from a New Jersey prison, where he'd spent the past 15 years for robbing a shoe store near the Jersey Shore. On Saturday, he took a bus to that same store and allegedly robbed it again.
"I knew who he was right away," the manager of Toms River Stride Rite told the New York Post. "I just think [he came back] because he didn't get anything the last time."
Employees tell police that he entered the store and demanded cash, telling the workers — a teenage boy and 43-year-old woman — to go to the back room. They refused.
He became agitated, according to police, and took the cash register drawer, which had $389.
He then took the workers' cell phones and fled on foot.
Police found him a few blocks from the store, with the cash in his pockets; the cash register was discovered in a nearby gutter, and the cell phones were in a garbage can.
"I have no idea what he was thinking." Officer Ralph Stocco from the Toms River Police Department told the Post. "We thought it was extremely strange ourselves that he would just rob the same store a second time so many years later."
Stocco's chief, Mitchell Little, said he thinks Miller may have wanted to return to prison.
"Maybe that's the only life he knows, and the only thing he could think of was going back to the same store and doing the same crime again — getting caught and going back where he was taken care of and told what to do and getting meals and shelter and everything else," he said.
