A Florida man convicted of murdering two people reportedly dared a judge to sentence him to death, claiming he doesn't believe that the Supreme Court would actually allow an innocent man to die.

According to NBC Miami, a jury convicted 25-year-old James Herard in May over a string of Dunkin' Donuts robberies that left two people dead. Herard was ultimately found guilty on 18 of 19 charges—including felony murder—and the jury issued a non-binding recommendation for the death penalty.

Herard's statements came during a sentencing hearing Friday at the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale.

Herard—who reportedly did not pull the trigger but encouraged the shooter to kill one of the victims—denied his involvement and spoke repeatedly of a misguided belief that the United States legal system executes only guilty people.

According to NBC:

"Honestly and truly, I'm not asking you to spare me," James Herard said in Broward County courtroom on Friday. "Go ahead and do what you gonna do. I pretty much dare you to give me the death sentence because I'm innocent."

"I'm actually hoping you give me the death penalty because I know the Supreme Court won't allow me to die for something I didn't commit," Herard said Friday.
