Man Captured After Killing Two California Officers in Shooting Spree
The Placer County sheriff's office reports a suspect accused of shooting four people on Friday morning, three of them Northern California sheriff's deputies, was found and forced to surrender after a manhunt. Two deputies were killed in his shooting spree, while the third deputy and a civilian were injured.
According to the New York Times, the suspected gunman, 34-year-old Marcelo Marquez of Salt Lake City, was arrested late Friday afternoon in a house in Auburn after a manhunt that stretched from Sacramento to the Sierra Nevada.
The AP reports the shooting began around 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning, when Sacramento County sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver, 47, was shot in the forehead while checking on a suspicious car in a Motel 6 parking lot. Oliver was reportedly the first deputy killed since 2008 and a 15-year veteran.
Oliver was unable to return fire, but his partner shot back as the car, containing a man and a woman, drove away. They drove about a mile before carjacking Anthony Holmes, 38, who refused to give up his keys. He was shot in the head and, according to the Sacramento Bee, was listed in serious condition at UC Davis Medical Center on Friday night.
According to the New York Times, several hours after taking Holmes' white mustang, the attackers stole a red Ford pickup from Jose Cruz, who was gardening in Sacramento.
The truck reportedly pulled over in Auburn, where it was spotted by two Placer County deputies. Marquez allegedly shot them both, killing Homicide Detective Michael David Davis Jr., 42, and fled the scene on foot. Dena Erwin, spokeswoman for the Placer County sheriff's office, reports they were shot with a AR-15 semiautomatic rifle.
The woman accompanying Marquez was also arrested, and authorities say they found a handgun in her purse.
