Hours after his wedding reception, a Kansas City firefighter was shot and killed by an off-duty Kansas City police officer, allegedly after the firefighter got into a fight with a cab driver.

Anthony Bruno, a six-year veteran of the Kansas City fire department and the son of the retired fire deputy chief, was married in Florida on November 16. Saturday night, he celebrated his wedding with friends and family in Kansas City. After the reception, at about 2:30 am Sunday, an intoxicated Bruno reportedly argued about a fare with a cab driver at his hotel, eventually punching the driver.

An off-duty police officer working at the hotel responded and tried to detain Bruno, who quickly fled the scene. The officer gave chase and caught up with him several blocks away, at which point Bruno allegedly resisted arrest and attacked the officer.

Bruno reportedly was on top of the officer, beating him in the face, when the officer fired two shots from his service weapon, hitting Bruno in the chest, before passing out. When backup arrived, the officer was still unconscious, according to the Kansas City Police Department. Bruno was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died. The police officer was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bruno family," Kansas City Fire Department Battalion Chief Jame Garrett told Fox 2. "Our heart goes out to the brand new wife and family."

Bruno is survived by his two sisters, his parents, and his new wife, who was reportedly still wearing her wedding dress when the shooting took place.

An earlier version of the post stated the shooting took place hours after the wedding. The wedding reportedly took place two weeks before the reception.
