Most things are a poison if consumed in high enough doses. Water will destroy your kidneys if you drink too much of it over enough time. Oxygen will kill you if you breath in too much.

It's almost as if the whole of existence is predicted on the notions of constant evolution/renewal and "planned" obsolescence.

Sure, but sugar is poisonous at doses at which it's commonly being consumed.

The science supports our vastly increased consumption of sugar as the culprit behind many of the so-called diseases of western civilization. I don't think that means you need to cut out sugar completely, but it's fascinating to note that in 1980 (or thereabouts) Americans ate on average 40 lbs of sugar a year. Now it is 130 pounds.

Keeping my diet to 25 grams of sugar a day or less has been one of the hardest parts of changing my eating habits, but has also had the largest impact.
Example: A 12 oz can of Coke contains 33 grams of sugar just itself. Bye bye, soda...
Yeah, it's crazy how much sugar there is in soda. I know there's a large, diet-soda-will-give-you-cancer-someday crowd out there, but getting hooked on Diet Coke and not Coke-Coke is one of the reasons why I'm not otherwise overweight.
I don't drink pop, at all. And I don't really have a sweet tooth. But I do take 3 tbsp of honey in each cup of tea. When I tracked calories for a week (last year) fully 1/3 of my calories were from honey. I drank a lot of tea a day. Apparently I am part bee.
I wouldn't call "three cans of soda" a "little bit of extra sugar".
It is when you consider that this is supposedly the volume of sugar equivalent to three cans of pop per day over the daily recommended intake. There are all sorts of things that a person can consume during the day that have added sugar in them, including plenty of things that don't even taste particularly sweet.
