Journey Singer Steve Perry Makes Surprise Return After 19 Year Hiatus
Nineteen years since his last public performance, former Journey frontman Steve Perry suddenly reappeared Sunday night, singing for the crowd during the encore of an Eels set in St. Paul, Minn. Yes, he sang "Open Arms." No, he did not sing "Don't Stop Believin'."
("Open Arms" starts around the 4:15 mark and "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" starts around 6:55.)
It's unclear what the connection is between Perry and Eels. Maybe the members of Eels are just big fans of cheesy, bombastic arena rock. Maybe Steve Perry is a Eels fan. Maybe Steve Perry just really likes St. Paul, which is apparently known colloquially as "the Saintly City" and previously as "Pig's Eye."
Journey has since replaced Perry with two separate singers the band found singing covers on YouTube. The group's most recent lead singer's voice's resemblance to Perry's is...uncanny.
