The majority of Tuesday night’s mayoral debate between Bill de Blasio and Joe Lhota was spent covering the usual topics: charter schools, taxes, small businesses, well-paying jobs, the income gap, and stop and frisk policies. Both candidates even agreed on the importance of building more affordable housing in the city.

But the biggest moment of an otherwise boring debate came when Lhota angrily chastised de Blasio for portraying him as a “national Republican,” stating that his differences from national Republicans are “long and hard”:

“I am pro-choice; they are not. I am pro-gay rights as well as marriage equality; they are not. I have been outspoken about these issues over and over again."

"Do not lump me with the national Republicans. It’s unbecoming.”

Later, when arguing about saving jobs in the city, de Blasio told voters that his opponent had "never met a corporate subsidy he didn't like."

The next debate between the two candidates will be held on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. EST.
