Jailed Hero Hitchhiker Kai Tried to Kill Himself
Kai, the "hatchet-wielding hitchhiking hero" whose claim to Internet fame took a dark turn a few months back when he was accused of murdering an elderly lawyer, tried to take his own life yesterday, according to officials at the Union County jail where he is currently being held.
Born Caleb McGillivary, the 24-year-old Canadian was arrested in May on murder charges after police in New Jersey found the dead body of 73-year-old Joseph Galfy — a partner in a Rahway law firm in whose home McGillivary reportedly spent the night.
The two met "by chance" in Times Square, and McGillivary ended up at Galfy's residence in Clark under mysterious circumstances.
In a post on Facebook, McGillvary, who goes by Caleb Kai Lawrence Yodhehwawheh, claimed Galfy drugged him and then sexually assaulted him, but Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow dismissed the allegations as "self-serving."
McGillivary was found injured in his cell yesterday morning, and officials say his wounds were of a self-inflicted nature.
It is unclear how they were caused, but a spokesman for the county said they were not life threatening.
He remains at an area hospital under observation.
McGillivary pleaded not guilty at his June 3rd arraignment. He is currently awaiting the results of a grand jury investigation.
