Israel Vows to Destroy Hamas Tunnels "With or Without" a Cease-fire
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put Israel's military plans plainly this morning: "We have neutralized dozens of terror tunnels and we are committed to complete this mission, with or without a cease-fire." The Israeli army has called up 16,000 more reservists and asked the U.S. for more ammunition.
Netanyahu continued in his statement, "I will not agree to any offer that does not allow the military to complete this important mission for the security of the people of Israel." According to a U.S. defense official who spoke to CNN, the U.S. "has agreed to Israel's request to resupply it with several types of ammunition... Among the items being bought are 120mm mortar rounds and 40mm ammunition for grenade launchers."
The White House did condemn an Israeli attack on a Gaza school yesterday without mentioning Israel. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was more direct: He called the shelling of the school shelter "unjustifiable ... Nothing is more shameful than attacking sleeping children," he said.
Over 1,300 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict so far. Fifty-three Israeli soldiers and three Israeli civilians have also been killed.
