Ugh. I can't stand this shit. Please explain what the purpose of killing this animal was OTHER than to get a shiny trophy was.
FTR - I hate hunting but I get that deer and duck hunting helps cull the herd so that they don't starve to death. So I'm not some tree hugging "let everything live" person. But I don't see the point of this at all.
Please explain what the purpose of killing this animal was OTHER than to get a shiny trophy was.
Food and skin and sport, just like any other animal states allow you to hunt. I don't know too many people that have gators mounted... but, just the skin off that gator is worth a lot, and the meat could be sold to local restaurants for a hunk, I think.
If you don't mind culling dear and you eat meat, you shouldn't really have a problem with this. I mean, an animal is still going to get killed for you to eat, ain't it? What's the difference?
I live in the south, alligators are far from scarce. And they freaking taste good! Fried with some remoulade sauce... yum.
Alligators are actually overrunning this area - I live on the reservoir created from the river where these animals were caught (I am guessing, I haven't seen a report saying exactly where they were caught but knowing the river...) and we see hundreds. One made it's way into my yard last year: it was only a three-footer, but large enough to do serious damage to my toddler. They do generally leave people alone, but dogs aren't always so lucky....
A few years ago the fisheries department allowed a limited hunting season with a very limited number of permits. I think this was the first year hunters were allowed to go up-river. I don't like hunting. I don't actually know many hunters, despite living in Mississippi. But the alligator population has become a serious problem; and if we aren't going to hunt them (the meat is quite tasty) then they need to be relocated, but where?
Wait a minute, are we duck hunting now to cull? I didn't know this. Are these the mallards that swarm city parks cuting themselves handouts? Our are these the other mallards thriving in our predator free suburbs, paddling around man made retention ponds and golf course water hazards. Are hunters allowed to hunt in parks and suburban back yards?
I would like to know more about the duck cull.
I don't know. I support a policy of murdering 727 pound alligators on principle even if I don't approve of how it was done in practice.
Better not step foot in Mississippi for a while Hamilton.
Yaaaaaaaaay.
