How Poor Are You Compared to Cristiano Ronaldo? Let's Find Out!
Cristiano Ronaldo is a soccer superstar who makes a boatload of money kicking balls into goals. How much money does Spanish club Real Madrid pay him? Somewhere near twenty million dollars ($) a year. Have you ever wanted to know how poor you are in comparison to the Portuguese footballer? Follow me.
In a new addition to their A Richer World series, the BBC has put together a handy calculator that shows the brutal reality of your paycheck versus Ronaldo's (as well as a handful of other lesser paid soccer stars). Ronaldo is the second highest-paid athlete in the world, behind Floyd Mayweather.
So how do you stack up? For the sake of our collective depression, I plugged in a $50,000 salary.
In 21 minutes, Ronaldo could earn our hypothetical weekly salary, a little under $1,000 pre-tax. What can we do in 21 minutes? Make a plate of spaghetti. Run two miles at a quick pace. Take a nap, call an old friend. Rest in our own filth. Oh, and don't forget that Ronaldo also makes stacks of endorsement cash on top of his salary, making his yearly earnings somewhere near $80 million. It's all good.
The BBC also points out that if our $50,000-a-year cog in the economic machine had started working in the year 1541 and somehow managed to evade death for 500 years, he or she would have made Ronaldo's annual wage by now. Almost.
This section of the handy salary factsheet, I shall present sans comment:
Wanna try it out and feel the weightlessness of your bimonthly paycheck? Here you go. It's fun!
