A major engine malfunction aboard a British Airways flight bound for Oslo caused the plane to start spewing fire and smoke as it headed back to Heathrow Airport to make an emergency landing.

Heathrow suffered serious delays after officials ordered runways closed to accommodate the Airbus A319-100.

According to initial reports, the plane, carrying 75 passengers and 5 crew members, had just taken off when a loud bang was heard from the left-side engine.

After leveling off, another loud bang was heard from the right-hand engine. The cowling doors on both engines were stripped away, and the right-hand engine was on fire.

Happily, the pilot managed to land the plane safely in Heathrow, and only a few minor injuries were reported.

An investigation into the cause of the malfunction is ongoing.
