Florida AG Sorry for Delaying Man's Execution to Fit Her Schedule

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi apologized yesterday for delaying a man's execution because it conflicted with a reelection fundraiser she'd planned.

Bondi requested that Marshall Lee Gore's execution be moved from September 10 to October 1, a request Florida Governor Rick Scott approved. In a press conference yesterday Bondi would neither confirm nor deny that her fundraiser was behind the rescheduling, but she expressed regret for the change, saying, "I should not have requested the execution be moved." She continued:

"And just so you know, (Gore) has filed another motion this past Friday, asking that it be (delayed) once again," Bondi said. "And we are fighting that.”
"But I should not have moved it," she continued. "I'm sorry. And it will not happen again."

Hey, when you preside over a state that's already killed four prisoners this year alone, sometimes you've got to move things around in order to be reelected and continue killing prisoners. Nobody's perfect.

Gore is on death row for killing a couple of women in 1988. Their families have been waiting 25 years for some kind of closure. However they feel about executing him, I am certain his impending execution is a highly emotional event for them. To reschedule it because of some political event is trivializing one of the most significant things a government can do to a degree I can't even fathom.

This woman should be impeached, but being Florida, she'll probably get elected governor in a few years.

"Closure" - let's ban that word, please. Especially when associated with the killing of a human being. These families will not be magically healed because the state of Florida decided to express its disapproval for murder by killing someone. This business of "the family needs closure" is one of the most frankly evil products of pop psychology. The death penalty is revenge, nothing more, and has no place in a civilized society.

I don't disagree with you. And I happen to oppose the death penalty, actually. But as offensive as the idea seems to many, families of murder victims do generally tend to view the execution as a form of closure (there are plenty of exceptions, of course). The point is that, no matter their feelings about closure, they can't have been emotionally neutral about the execution. One of the biggest complaints you will hear from victim's rights groups is the way executions are continually rescheduled. It's bad enough to have it happen for good reasons; to have it happen like this is a slap in the face.
