Louisiana officials say a six-year-old boy was fatally shot when marshals opened fire on his father’s car while the man fled from an attempt to serve a warrant. The boy was riding in the car’s passenger seat.

From an Associated Press report:

Avoyelles Parish Coroner Dr. L. J. Mayeux identified the driver as Chris Few and his son as Jeremy Mardis, a first-grader at a nearby elementary school. The coroner said Mardis died from multiple gunshot wounds to his head and chest.

Chris Few was critically wounded and was listed in serious condition this morning, according to the report. Few, while attempting to flee, had reportedly driven to a dead end, and was “backing into the marshals when they fired.”

“More likely than not they were shooting into the driver side, and [Mardis] was on the passenger side,” Mayeux said. “He was in the line of fire.”

Jeremy Mardis had reportedly moved to the area from Mississippi in the last year, and was living with his father and grandmother. He was in first grade at Lafargue Elementary School.
