Firefighters Shocked by Power Line While Performing Ice Bucket Challenge
Four fighters were shocked by a power line helping students at Campbellsville University perform the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The firefighters were spraying the school's marching band on a campus athletic field when they were shocked, with two severely injured.
Captain Tony Grider, 41, and Simon A. Quinn, 22, who were riding in the ladder's bucket and closest to the power line, were airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital and are being treated in the hospital's burn unit. Grider remains in critical condition, WHAS11 reports; Quinn has been "upgraded from serious to fair condition." Captain Steve Marrs, 37 and Alex Johnson, 28, were also shocked by electricity traveling down the ladder.
"From talking with power company technicians, if you get within a distance of three or four feet, the energy that surrounds the high-voltage wire will actually arc over onto another object," Campbellsville Police Chief Tim Hazlette told WAVE, "in this case being the personnel occupying the bucket."
