Why is it unlikely to make a profit? It cost around $115 million to make and it made $30.4 million at opening. That's better numbers than After Earth and Lone Ranger which cost more to make and have gone on to make $240M and $175M worldwide. I don't know whats going on in the industry right now, but bar the surprising success of World War Z, you're not going to do numbers unless you have giant robots and/or superheroes in your movie.
Box Office Mojo said it was unlikely to pass $100 million domestically. And the $115 million budget doesn't include marketing costs, which I would think would be at least in the $60 million range. Plus there's the cut movie theater owners take.
But the majority of box office now comes from the international markets. The large majority.
But I guess considering DVD sales, TV rights etc., it's probably safer to just call the film's debut "disappointing" rather than speculate on its eventual profitability (or lack of) when everything is factored in.
You know, I keep forgetting that marketing isn't included in the budget. My bad.
