A North Carolina police officer is suing Starbucks for $50,000 over a free cup of coffee that allegedly collapsed into the cop’s lap and burned his lap.

According to WRAL, Lt. Matthew Kohr of the Raleigh police department claims that in January 2012 the lid of a free cup of coffee he received from a downtown Starbucks popped off, causing the cup to collapse and spill scalding hot coffee onto his lap.

The ensuring burns and blisters allegedly triggered an onset of Crohn’s disease—resulting in surgery to remove part of Kohr’s intestine—and hampered his relationship with his wife, who said the injuries have caused her to lose a “source of emotional support, her social companion and her intimate partner.” Damn.

Kohr and his wife are seeking $50,000 in damages, including damages, attorney fees and medical costs.
