Conor Oberst's Rape Accuser Says She Made It All Up
In December 2013, a woman commenting on an xoJane post about the sexual abuse of another woman's rock star boyfriend accused Conor Oberst, best known for his project Bright Eyes, of raping her a decade before. Now, the woman, who Oberst sued in February for libel, is recanting the whole thing.
Joanie Faircloth provided a notarized statement in the case that says her accusations were 100% false. Her statement was acquired by BuzzFeed through Oberst's publicist.
Her full statement is here:
"The statements I made and repeated online and elsewhere over the past six months accusing Conor Oberst of raping me are 100% false. I made up those lies about him to get attention while I was going through a difficult period in my life and trying to cope with my son's illness. I publicly retract my statements about Conor Oberst, and sincerely apologize to him, his family, and his fans for writing such awful things about him. I realize that my actions were wrong and could undermine the claims of actual sexual assault victims and for that I also apologize. I'm truly sorry for all the pain that I caused."
There were rumors swirling that Oberst had been dropped from his record label for the accusations, but those rumors were proven to be false.
