Early Thursday morning, Democratic Representative Debbie Dingell took the podium at the House sit-in to make an impassioned call for new gun control measures, drawing on her own experience as a child terrorized by the threat of gun violence.

“I lived in a house with a man who should not have had access to a gun,” said Dingell. “I know what’s like to see a gun pointed at you and wonder if you were gonna live. And I know what it’s like to hide in a closet and pray, ‘Do not let anything happen to me.’”

Dingell, who introduced a bill last year to prevent convicted stalkers and domestic abusers from owning firearms, acknowledged she had reservations about the no-fly list, but chastised Republicans for refusing to discuss the proposal that would bar those on the list from owning firearms.

“How can we protect civil liberties if you won’t come to the table and have the discussion about how you keep us safe?” said Dingell.
