A military charter plane carrying approximately 100 Americans unexpectedly landed in Iran today on its way to Dubai, the Washington Post reports.

The flydubai plane, chartered by coalition military forces in Afghanistan, took off from Bagram Air Base in that country, according to the Post. When Iranian air traffic controllers questioned its flight plan and instructed it to return to Afghanistan, the pilots reportedly replied that the aircraft did not have enough fuel to do so, and the controllers instructed it to land.

The plane may or may not have received a military escort. From the Post:

One official said Iranian fighter jets had escorted the plane, which was carrying approximately 100 Americans and possibly a pair of Canadians, to the ground. Other officials denied that, and said the plane landed on its own. It was expected to resume its flight quickly.
