The Baltimore Police released a statement Monday morning claiming that they’ve received “credible information” about members of the Crips, Bloods, and other local gangs joining forces to “take-out” police officers. Hmm.

“Law enforcement agencies should take appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of their officers,” the statement reads.

Was there a specific threat or piece of evidence that triggered the warning? Something to make police actually believe that the notoriously hostile gangs had put aside their differences to unite against a common enemy, Avengers-style? Eh. Captain Eric Kowalczyk, the department’s spokesman, told the Baltimore Sun that he couldn’t explain how the information was received or why it was deemed credible, or even if it has anything to do with the ongoing protests over the death of Freddie Gray, the Baltimore man who died last week after suffering a broken neck in police custody.

As the Sun notes, this is the third time in five months that police in Baltimore have issued similar warnings. From the Sun:

In December, the Baltimore FBI office issued a memo that the Black Guerrilla Family gang was targeting “white cops” in Maryland, an agency spokeswoman confirmed.

The memo, circulating among officers, said a contact who had given reliable information in the past said members of the gang — connected to the high-profile corruption scandal at the Baltimore City Detention Center — were planning to target white officers to “send a message.”

And in January, police were on heightened alert after a man brought a gun into the Northeastern District police station with a handgun and said it was part of a “security test” ordered by the BGF.

Police issued the latest statement as hundreds of family members, friends, and supporters gathered for Gray’s funeral.
