Union jobs are about our only middle class jobs left, and there are less and less of them, thanks to the union busting republicans. We need MORE union jobs, not less. Please don't buy the republicans line of fat union pensions, etc. Such cases are extremely rare, but get tons of publicity. Even so, that is nothing compared to the lopsided salaries of corporate bigwigs compared to the workers (Amazon). Most union jobs are in the $ 30-50 K range, which is a decent living wage, but hardly extravagant. Retail workers such as at Walmart should be able to unite. How dare Walmart pay workers poverty wages with the insane profits they show?
Not to mention the historical importance of unions gaining all of us a 5-day, 8-hour work week, benefits, and a rising median income. Meanwhile, benefits are eroding, worker wages have stagnated since the 70s, and our economy is sorely lacking the middle-class spending that drove the economy for so many years.
But poor-to-middle-class Republicans are willing to trade all of that so that they can save a few bucks buying cheap crap in Walmart that was manufactured in regulation-free environments. If you're not in the 1% and you're anti-union you're effectively taking a stand against your own self-interests.
Government union employees are killing city after city. Give them a 401k and let them self invest. Unfunded pensions are killing everything.
But what happens when the 401k you've invested loses all value thanks to the shenanigans of the banking industry? What if you were set to retire right after the financial crisis? That's the benefit of pensions and social security - the market crashing (which has happened 17 times since around 1900, compared to 0 times in Canada thanks to its well-regulated banking industry) doesn't destroy your nest egg.
This is where we're at though: instead of workers wanting workers to get pensions, we have workers yelling at the unions for having them at all. Aren't we supposed to be envious of the rich, instead of lower-middle-class workers with a pension?
I read unions want Keystone. I read unions wanted Detroit to continue building gas guzzlers instead of learning a thing or two from the East. Gee... people can be dumb.
Just saying: Where's the outrage over Bezos that was directed at the Kochs? Both are right-wing, anti-union ideologues...
Bezos doesn't heavily fund multiple PAC's, universities, think tanks, non-profits, etc. to promote right wing ideology. The Koch brothers do.
Yeah but Bezos sells me cheap crap delivered for free. I only rely on the Kochs for Stainmaster carpet.
Good cop / Bad cop
Nobody ever gets riled at the good cops.
Wait! The K-Bros produce carpet? No wonder I can't stand them. Concrete floors all the way!
So minimalist! So beautiful!!!!!!! Viva La Concrete!
You know what? I think this purchase of the WP is a good thing. It will finally shine a light on these silicon valley types. Good 'ol Jeff is going to be in the hot seat for a while and that can only be a good thing. It will demystify the aura around these people that are steeped in the imaginary sunshine and roses of the valley.
i'm sure the inevitable pending layoffs will not impact union membership in any way whatsoever.... bwahahahahahaha....
