A man was arrested Monday afternoon after he allegedly tried to bring a gun into the Capitol, prompting a Capitol police officer to shoot him before taking him into custody. It’s still unclear why the man had the gun, but he has, according to court documents, a violent history with the building.

The alleged gunman, Larry Russell Dawson, is currently in the hospital being treated for the gunshot wound he received after allegedly brandishing a gun near the metal detectors at the building’s Visitor Center. A female bystander was also reportedly injured by shrapnel. The details, via CNN:

The suspect attempted to go through the metal detectors at the Capitol Visitor Center entrance. When those magnetometers beeped, he was stopped by security and then pulled out what appears to be a weapon. A Capitol police officer then shot him, sources told CNN.

Dawson was arrested on a charge of assaulting a police officer in October after an outburst in the chamber of the House of Representatives. Court documents from that 2015 incident describe Dawson as a 66-year-old man from Tennessee. In that incident, according to the documents, Dawson “loudly stated to Congress he was a ‘prophet of God.’”

He was, CNN reports, “known to authorities as a frequent Capitol grounds visitor.” Both Dawson and the female bystander are expected to make full recoveries.
