Security Guard, Gunman Dead After Shooting Inside Federal Building in Lower Manhattan
A federal officer was shot this afternoon outside a federal building in Manhattan’s West Village. The suspect was also wounded and has reportedly been arrested.
According to PIX 11, the officer has been taken to Bellvue while the suspect, who apparently suffered cardiac arrest, was rushed to Lennox Hill Healthplex.
UPDATE 9:22 pm: The victim, Idrissa Camara, a 53-year-old security guard, has died from his wounds. The gunman, identified as Kevin Downing, 68, is also dead, reportedly of a self-inflicted gunshot. From the New York Post:
With a bag in hand, Kevin Downing of Fort Lee, N.J., walked into 201 Varick St. around 5:05 p.m. and approached 53-year-old Idrissa Camara, a guard who works for a private security contractor, near metal detectors in the lobby.
When Camara told the gunman he had to check his belongings, Downing dropped the bag and shot the guard once in the head with handgun, the sources said.
He then dashed through the security area, heading toward an elevator bank, where he another employee stopped him.
At that point he shot himself in the head, police officials said
UPDATE 6:03 pm: The gunman has reportedly died.
