7 People Killed, 41 Shot During Chicago's Most Violent Weekend of 2013
This weekend in Chicago at least 41 people were shot, seven of them fatally. The youngest victim was 16 years old.
28 of the shootings, including six of the fatal ones, took place between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening. Another 13 people, one fatally, were shot between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
The Chicago Tribune reports a trail of blood remained in a Northwest Side alley and on the bumper of a car, left behind from 16-year-old Kevin Rivera as he unsuccessfully attempted to outrun a gunman on a bicycle. From the Tribune:
Rivera’s family was planning to move in two weeks from their sometimes violent section of the Hermosa neighborhood, and a social worker was enrolling the teenager in the city's summer jobs program.
But late Saturday night, someone shot Rivera in the 4100 block of West North Avenue, police said. He attempted to run but collapsed a few feet away. The boy, who lived a few blocks away from the scene, was pronounced dead about 1:35 a.m. Sunday at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, authorities said.
Shooting and murder rates are down significantly in Chicago this year — homicide rates are 34 percent lower than 2012, through last week — though there was a spike in violent crime in the city last summer. The Tribune notes that around the same time in 2012, 53 people were shot, 9 fatally, during one weekend. In total, over 500 homicides took place in the city in 2012.
“There's going to be good days, and there's going to be bad days, which is why we've been calling this progress, not victory,” Chicago police spokesman Adam Collins said.
In March, a six-month-old baby died after she was shot five times in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood. Two months before that, a 15-year-old honor roll student who had just performed at Obama's inauguration was gunned down and killed in crossfire in a park near her Chicago high school.
