Hero Pit Bull Rushes to Rescue Humans and Dogs from Burning Home
Rhonda Westenberger, her sister Evelyn, and their five dogs are all safe and sound after a scary house fire — and they have their baby to thank for it.
Their 10-year-old pit bull terrier Baby, that is.
When the fire broke out early Tuesday morning, Baby was the only one who sensed the smoke. She immediately started barking and jumping on the two women to wake them up.
"There were flames shooting down the hallway," Rhonda told Oklahoma City's KOCO. "If Baby hadn't woken Evelyn up, I don't think either one of us would have come out of it."
Once the humans were out of harm's way, thoughts quickly turned to the five dogs still trapped inside. But Baby was already on it, having run back into the burning residence to pull them out.
"There was one hiding underneath the bed," a family member said. "Baby actually went in there grabbed it by the neck and drug it outside."
The home and the family's possessions were lost in the blaze, but Baby's bravery has kept Rhonda's spirits up.
"I'm so proud of her," she said. "[Baby] is my hero. She's the hero for all of us."
