Woman Fatally Struck by Subway Train in Brooklyn After Fainting on the Platform
The MTA is reporting this morning that a female subway patron was struck and killed by a southbound No. 3 train after falling on the tracks.
It is believed the woman fainted prior to the incident, which took place this morning at the Crown Heights – Utica Avenue station.
No further details have been released.
According to NBC New York, there were 55 subway-train-related deaths in 2012 — eight more than in the previous year.
The MTA has stepped up its efforts to keep people away from the platform's edge, going so far as to consider putting up barriers to prevent people from falling over.
Other initiatives include testing alarms that sound when something is on the tracks, and reducing station-approach speeds to 10 mph.
