9-Year-Old Gives Birth in Mexico; Whereabouts of 17-Year-Old Father Unknown
A nine-year-old girl from the impoverished town of Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos in western Mexico has given birth by Caesarean section to a healthy 5.7lb baby girl.
The young mother, identified only as Dafne, was reportedly impregnated by a 17-year-old whom she was said to be "dating."
The teen has since left town, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
"We are looking for the young man to get his story because she does not understand what has happened," said state prosecutor Jorge Villasenor. "This is a rape or child sex abuse case."
Dafne only became aware of her pregnancy around the seventh month, according to a spokesperson for the Prosecutor's Office.
"Her parents work all day and were not watching after her," said Lino Ginzalez Corona, "and therefore didn't realize what was about to happen." Corona also noted that Dafne was one of 11 children.
Despite her ordeal, Dafne is said to be doing fine, but will be closely monitored by doctors at Zoquipan Hospital due to her young age.
According to a Wikipedia list of known biological mothers under 12, Dafne is the youngest person to give birth in the past three years.
