Police in Delaware say former ABC News anchor and current contributor Sam Donaldson was pulled over earlier this month after driving onto the shoulder on Savannah Road in Lewes and was found to be intoxicated.

According to Police Chief Jeff Horvath, a field sobriety test was administered, which Donaldson failed to pass.

It remained unclear why the incident, which took place on December 1st, wasn't reported until today.

Donaldson, who was said to be "very cooperative," was booked and released. The veteran journalist resides in northern Virginia and will need to return to Delaware to face his DUI charge in court.

Several angry Twitter users feel Donaldson should charged with a much harsher crime given the deadliness of his alleged crime.

"ABC newsman Sam Donaldson ARRESTED for DUI...e should be FIRED & CHARGED with ATTEMPTED MURDER as DUI KILLS thousands kids a year," tweeted user @LEFTH00K.

According to the CDC, 211 children between the ages of 0 to 14 were killed by alcohol-impaired drivers in 2010 (131 were in the car at the time of the accident).

Others, like Rhode Island State Rep. Dan Gordon were a little more lenient. Perhaps too lenient: "Sam Donaldson arrested for getting his swerve on. But still, he didn't harm anyone or their property. Ridiculous."
