Trust No One: Violent Crime is Rising in America
The Bureau of Justice Statistics is reporting the violent crime rate in America rose last year, for the first time in almost two decades. The rise is due largely to a rise in assaults, now at 22.5 per 1,000 people.
This assault rate was determined by a telephone survey, which is definitely a more efficient way to calculate the violent crime rate than, say, looking at police records. Excuse me Mrs. Thompson, I'm sorry to bother you in the middle of dinner, but have you been assaulted in the past calendar year? No? Thank you very much, enjoy your pot roast.
The rate of assaults rose most among young, white (and Hispanic) men, but not women, which is what equality looks like in post-modern America.
