There are the standard concerns when walking down the street: dog crap, jutting tree roots, people sleeping. But imagine stepping onto organs.
Yes, a pair of lungs were found on a sidewalk in South Los Angeles — with no body in sight. Where did they come from? Why were they left out on the street? And who (or what) did they belong to?
The Los Angeles County Coroner's office is investigating. In a delightful understatement, spokesman Ed Winter called the disembodied lungs "a little strange."
And no one seems to know whether they're human or not, which makes it even more difficult to figure out if the ditched lungs are the result of foul play. While it's unlikely that they just slipped out of someone's pocket — or chest cavity — the lungs could be improperly disposed medical waste.
Sheriff's Sergeant Pauline Panis had few answers.
We don't know if it's even human. We don't even know what was found. … I can't even tell you; it might be a dog.
At the risk of sounding insensitive, here's hoping the lungs didn't belong to a dog.
