Today's Song: Squarepusher 'Dark Steering'
Whenever I hear electronic music this caustic, I like to imagine my (now dead) grandparents listening to it (when they were alive). Try it, it's fun. Rest in peace, guys (unless this is playing).
Here's the first single from British breakbeat deviant Squarepusher's upcoming 15th album, Ufabulum. True to form, Squarepusher (aka Tom Jenkinson) shits all over the concept of first singles, previewing the set with what is far from its most user-friendly option. He rips holes in his already tense design of squelches and paranoid beats, kind of like he appears to be ripping Daft Punk (or maybe deadmau5) a new one in the gorgeous video. You'll hear keyboards that wouldn't sound out of place on a trancey pop record, and annihilating them seems to be Ufabulum's consistent m.o. (one track sounds like a chainsaw taken to Rihanna's "Rude Boy"). Jenkinson has engaged with pop before, taking the piss out of 2-step with "Red Hot Car" and creating a floor filler in the process. This is more like a hammer to the face, but hey, his rotting heart's in the right place.
