Alan L. O'Neil might have gotten away with it, if it weren't for Facebook's meddling algorithms. O'Neil, a corrections officer, had the perfect plan. Why bother divorcing your first wife if you can just change your name and marry a new one?
O'Neill married a woman in 2001.The relationship soured in 2009, and he moved out and changed his name without divorcing her. He then remarried. Then things got complicated. From The Washington Post:
The first wife first noticed O'Neill had moved on to another woman when Facebook suggested the friendship connection to wife No. 2 under the "People You May Know" feature.
"Wife No. 1 went to wife No. 2's page and saw a picture of her and her husband with a wedding cake," Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist told The Associated Press.Wife No. 1 then called the defendant's mother.
It gets better. In 2010 wife No. 1 had a physical altercation with wife No. 2 when had not yet become wife No. 2.
Also, heed this warning from Prosecutor Lindquist the next time you think about posting up a pic showing you murdering that drifter. "Facebook is now a place where people discover things about each other they end up reporting to law enforcement," he said.
