Teenage Girl Continues to Shoot Hoops While In a Coma
Maggie Meier, who went into a coma after suffering a seizure in 2008, was somehow still able to shoot a beach ball through a hoop while in her, to use a Margaret Atwood-ism, fallow state. Meier had played basketball for years, and doctors believe that the motion of shooting a basket was so deeply ingrained in her that she was able to do it without thinking.
Off and on for the two-and-a-half months she was in the coma, Meier's family would move her into a chair and give her a beach ball to shoot through a makeshift hoop. She would practice for several minutes before returning to her comatose state. Now nearly fully recovered, Meier says she has absolutely no memory of playing.
