Where Did That 'What People Think I Do' Meme Come From and How Can It Be Stopped?

This was the week Facebook turned into the "What People Think I Do" machine. Has there ever been a meme both so ubiquitous and so uninteresting? This is the web 2.0 version of those awful "You might be a ___" chain emails of the nineties.

According to Know Your Meme, the "What People Think I Do" meme was created by the artist Garnet Hertz on February 9th. His image above was the satanic seed pod from which this scourge spread. About three days later it was the only thing on Facebook, and every possible career/category of human/hobby had been covered. (Sorry, but "society" has no opinion about web developers and kennel workers.) Just goes to show humanity's inner drive to share with the world that, Yes, I have a job and it's even more boring than you could imagine. It's enough to make you miss "Shit ___ Says."

For a bit there it seemed the only solution was to shut down the internet for a week, reset the whole goddamn web back to January. But the torrent seems to have been stemmed. Now we can get back to the important Facebook work: Endlessly reposting that picture about how all the people at the congressional birth control hearing were men.
